Conductor HANNAH SCHNEIDER won the prestigious Oxford conducting competition in 2017 to conduct the Oxford University Philharmonia, and was named Music Director for the 2017-2018 season. She studied violin performance at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and worked as a first violinist at the Opera de Bauge, France. After an injury, she temporarily left music and earned a BA from Georgetown University. During this time, she produced an album entitled Music From the Mountains, featuring child prodigies from the violence-stricken North Caucasus region of Russia. Last year, Hannah worked as assistant to conducting maestro Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre, as well as coordinator of the I International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok and Managing Director of the Jury of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition. Previously, she conducted the St Michel Strings in Mikkeli, Finland, and in 2016, founded the Oxford Alternative Orchestra with a view to exploring the overlap of music and social impact. She is reading for an MPhil in Musicology at the University of Oxford.
